Looking forward into 2022....

 Which  Achievement Challenge are you considering as an area of focus in 2022 and why? Include in your WHY both evidence and your own passion/expertise

 

  • Achievement challenge 5. 

  • 32% of our learners at Stonefields School on the Student Support register. 

  • literacy interventions with a group of student support learners across year 3 and 4. 

  • strength in building positive relationships with learners and whānau 

  • seeing these learners make progress (even small steps) and igniting the spark for learning has been so rewarding. 

  • I really want to know more about how to best support these learners.

  •  I have observed that many learners who are coming into year 3 have low oral language, they have little knowledge about phonics and how to read chunks in words and therefore do not have the confidence or ability to write. 

 

What learnings from the 2017 - 2021 CoL teacher inquiries have informed or inspired your thinking?

 

  • it has been inspiring working with Anita and Sammy on our inquiry about feedback in writing. I hope to continue working in this collaborative way next year. -

  • Jo Gormlys research on using high interest topics for hands-on learning tasks.  

  • Amy Tofa’s post about self efficacy. 

  • Stonefields language around the learning pit and learner qualities. This also connects with me as I want all my learners to have a love of learning and also a ‘can do’ attitude towards learning. 

 

How would your work support Manaiakalani pedagogy and  kaupapa?

 

This inquiry would support the Manaiakalani pedagogy of Learn, Create, Share. Throughout this inquiry I will gather evidence to learn how to support the learners in my inquiry. I will research to make sure that my inquiry is evidence based. I will try out new teaching strategies and make changes to my teaching. Throughout the process, I will share my findings on my blog as well as with my colleagues and other members of the COL. 

 

Which elements of the extensive Manaiakalani research findings inform or challenge you as you think about this?

 

Research that would inform my inquiry world be Rebecca Jessons - T shaped literacy and how to create a wide reading programme.

How would you like to be supported in 2022 as you undertake this inquiry?

 

  •  conversations with other CoL teachers in our CoL meetings. 

  • Manaiakalani learn, create share meetings 

  • opportunities for PD or conversations with experts around my inquiry topic. 

 

How would you plan to support your colleagues in your school with THEIR inquiries and/or teaching in the area you are exploring?


  • running optional workshops for other colleagues around some of my findings for example designing learning and what makes an effective writing programme.

  • literacy team in my school and my research is shared in this space and then in staff PD sessions where relevant. 

  •  I am a collaborative person and I enjoy working alongside my colleagues to support us all to grow our practice.

  •  I am thinking about how I could use my release days to get into the other learning hubs and work alongside teachers to support my findings from my inquiry.

The results from the Combi Tool: From the Combi Tool data, we noticed that the learners are not necessarily shy and they are willing to communicate with others. However, they lack the ability to articulate elaborated responses. I am thinking about whether they are given opportunities to build on their responses? Are elaborate responses modelled or scaffolded to them regularly? We also notice that learners require prompting when responding and their responses are rarely spontaneous. This makes me wonder about the culture of the hub? Do we allow learners time to think about responses? Are they given time to share these responses regularly? Empathetic Educators: Session 1 on CBT

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)  I am stoked to be working closely with a lovely colleague; Naomi who has done loads of research around neuroscience around how the brain affects our emotions and behaviour.  Our first session was about CBT: Fear, Anxiety, trauma, behaviour that challenges us. We came away with a lot of things to think about as well as a bank of helpful resources to support learners who might be struggling with anxiety.  Naomi discussed the idea that often our thoughts and feelings are built up to be a lot greater than they really are and often we need to capture the thought and then break it down with evidence for and against that thought. #8 How the data will be used as baseline data at the end of the year

  Explain how some of the data you have used to build a profile of the students’ learning will be used as baseline data at the end of the year. As you can see in post #4,  we have collected formative assessment data from Running Records, Little Learners Love Literacy and Liz Kane's 'The Code' spelling tests to gather baseline evidence for where our target learners are sitting at the beginning of the year. We will use these assessments throughout the year and will monitor their progress. If we notice that there has been no shift in the data at the middle of this inquiry, we will revaulate.  We have also decided to monitor the wellbeing of these learners. Stonefield's has developed a Wellbeing Assessment Tool called Te Whare Tapa Wha. We will use this to monitor the wellbeing of learners at the beginning of the year and the end.  We are also able to track their wellbeing progressions through Schooltalk.
