TAI post 5: My preliminary findings
The results from the Combi Tool:
From the Combi Tool data, we noticed that the learners are not necessarily shy and they are willing to communicate with others. However, they lack the ability to articulate elaborated responses. I am thinking about whether they are given opportunities to build on their responses? Are elaborate responses modelled or scaffolded to them regularly?
We also notice that learners require prompting when responding and their responses are rarely spontaneous. This makes me wonder about the culture of the hub? Do we allow learners time to think about responses? Are they given time to share these responses regularly? What feedback is given to them about conversations?
Student voice: What did you learn about today?
"I learnt how to stop and sound out words.”
Answers show that learners do not have the dialogue to discuss what they have been learning about. They touch on the surface of the learning but it is not specific.
Reflection:
Could I give them visuals to support their learning? I need to allow time for learners to reflect on that learning. Could I use some sentence starters focus around the learner qualities to build up this dialogue?Student voice: How do you know if you have been successful in your learning?
“Because I would know what the sentence is and the teacher will help me.”
Answers show that learners are requiring a lot of support from the teacher to talk about their learning.
Reflection:
Do they understand what it means to be successful in their learning? Could I allow more time to discuss the success criteria at the end of each lesson. Do I need to offer speaking frames for each success criteria?
Could this be connected to the learning pit?
Student voice: what do you do if you are stuck on your learning?
M- “I ask the teacher to help me”
J - “If you read the wrong sentence, try again”
K -“Stop and sound it out”
Answers show that learners are requiring a lot of support from the teacher to talk about their learning.
Reflection:
Again I think more dialogue around the success criteria and specific reading strategies would help these learners. Could this be connected to the learning pit? How could I make this dialogue useful for these learners across other curriculum areas?
Parent voice:
The parent voice showed that Schooltalk is the preferred method for communication updates about their child' s learning.
This graph shows that not all learners are talking with their parents about what they are learning in school regularly.
The parent voice showed that Schooltalk is the preferred method for communication updates about their child' s learning.
This graph shows that not all learners are talking with their parents about what they are learning in school regularly.
The survey also showed a high result for parents wanting more tools coming home with their learners.
Reflection:
Continue to keep parents informed via Schooltalk but what extra tools can I gift to the parents to support their learners at home?
Are the learners not discussing their learning with their whanau because they do not know how? Or are there other barriers?
