DFI Session 3: So much fun getting creative!

Today was so much fun. We focused on the Create aspect of the Manaikalani Learn Create Share and I learned so many new tricks to get creative with my learners as well as how to use Google tools creatively as a resource for my teaching.

Create

Children from the day they are born love to create! But somewhere along the way, it gets knocked out of them.
Sir Ken Robinson - advocates for creativity in schools.

Employers need and want people who are creative!

How could I use the create aspect for literacy - in particular Oral Language?

Slides to Create

Digital technologies are such a hook for our young people.
With the removal of paper and pen writing results has improved!! Children can now focus on being creative writers.
However how can we use technology to empower creativity in reading and maths?
Do we have time for learners to learn, create and share throughout every day?
I need to make sure I am providing learners opportunities to share their creativity.
Create is empowered through: Information/knowledge
Developing skills - yes they do need to be taught skills
    Building capacity
      Scaffolding

      Storyline Online

      Stories read by famous actors.

      Youtube Playlists

Great way to share content with learners but also preventing them from accessing irrelevant videos.
Good idea to subscribe to other peoples playlists.
A great playlist for the level 1 exam at the end of the course Level 1 Google Certified Educator exam

I have now created some some playlists for my learners.

      Google Drawing

When setting up your drawing, be mindful of the size depending on what you what to use it for. Go to page setup to change size.
Just like Google, it can be shared with embed code.
You can completely edit your Google drawing within Google docs

      Google slides

“Just because you can, doesn't mean you should”
“White space is your best friend”
What is your message? - Use idea of twitter - can it be told in 140 characters?
      What will tell your story?
“Pictures really are worth a 1000 words” Only put it up if it telling your story.
      Ditch the defaults
      Embrace BLANK slides
Multiple fonts is not our friend
You shouldn’t be reading your slides - if it’s important enough to be on there, give wait time to read

This was so much fun! Naomi and I have put in a date to collaborate with our reading groups to do some creating on Google Slides.
It will be so cool to see some collaboration between juniors and seniors!

Google draw - creating a digital image

Install Colorpick eye dropper Google Chrome extension
Use curve or polyline - only use one finger at a time on the track pad
Create a shape using curve or polyline eg outline your face or hair.
To move between layers (each piece you have drawn with curve is a layer)
Press command up or down to move the order.
To select your accurate skin colours:
Get your colour pick extension and wave the mouse over the colour on your actual
face. Select colour and copy the code that it comes up with.
Go back to image and bring your digital cut out forwards and go to your
paint pot > custom > paste colour code
Here is my attempt at a digital portrait:
Remove background website to remove background of photos
