Inquiry update term 3
Learners are loving the oral language opportunities!
Feedback from learners:
I've made a few more changes to my reading programme:
1. Must do/can do's that encourage talking and deeper thinking about the book before they see me. This is allowing learners opportunities to develop agency in reading.
2. Use of paper modelling books. They still have digital modelling books but I am seeing such a positive change in the way they are collaborating and engaging in their learning with these paper modelling books.
3. Recently my hub has been having coaching around how to make the wall displays in the hub more interactive and purposeful for the learning. I have attempted to create wall displays that encourage learner agency.

Feedback from learners about what has helped make this shift:
Asking questions about my learning
I like to discuss the books and read the whole book before I see the teacher
Having teacher workshops
Asking a friend to help me
The bookmark thing helps me when I read at home
It helps me to put a bookmark thing on the lines so I don’t read the lines below
What helps me with writing is actually reading
Using clues in the book to read tricky words
Reading at home
Reflections:
I think these changes to my reading programme have been very successful in encouraging learner agency. I am seeing positive changes in writing as well but I think this is something to further develop
How am I using verbal feedback (teacher-learner, learner-learner and learner-self) to develop agency in writing?
How am I showcasing this shift?
I think parent engagement and a strong partnership with whanau is supporting the shift in many of these learner.
How am I building that relationship with parents I do not see often?
Next steps:
- Oral language around the Schooltalk progressions to continue to develop agency in writing - this could connect to the success criteria of each writing workshop.
- Using oral language opportunities to develop agency in maths
- Continue to develop a relationship with parents of target learners
