#5 Preliminary Findings
Begin to collect evidence and data and come to the next session ready to share your preliminary findings about the nature and extent of the student challenge i.e. using your baseline student data and evidence
Learner voice
It was pleasing to see that all except 1 learner said that they enjoyed writing and were able to share some topics that they like to write about.
It was interesting to see that all learners did not have clear goals in mind and do not know how to find out their next steps.
This made me think about feedback.
How can feedback be given regularly so that learners understand their next steps?
How are learners tracking their progress?
Another thing I found interesting was the question about why we learn about writing? They know they need to know how to write as an adult but writing does not appear to have any purpose to them right now.
How can I make writing more meaningful? So they are writing for a purpose.
Schooltalk Gap Analysis
After reading the learner voice responses, I straight away checked the gap analysis for Assessment Capable.
It showed that this is an area for improvement for all my target learners.
Schooltalk also showed me that learners have gaps in the following areas:
Vocabulary
Sentence Structure
Writing legibility
Punctuation
Spelling
Writing Samples:
The preliminary writing samples matched up with the Schooltalk gaps. A quick snapshot showed me areas for improvement for my target learners are:
Writing legibility/handwriting
Vocabulary - basic vocabulary used and ideas lacked elaboration
Punctuation - little punctuation used and confusion about full stops and capital letters
Spelling - spelling simple words incorrectly and appear to have no strategies to find correct spellings
Assessment capable - only 2 used success criteria and did not use it to improve their writing.
